Condition: Very Good. Unpaginated (86 pages), maroon illustrated wrappers. This is an album of early photographs taken of the New York red light district around 1912 by Bellocq. Friedlander took prints from the original plates for this book and they provide a fascinating documentary on bordellos at this interesting time in history. Reputedly never taking 'dirty' pictures of the girls, Bellocq confined his endeavors to recording for posterity these ladies in both clad and unclad poses. The foreword takes the form of a conversation between Friedlander and Dan Leyrer, who was also a photographer and a contemporary of Bellocq. Record # 350788.…

Light reading wear, slight wear to edges of dustjacket else very good condition. From the dustjacket: Storyville, the notorious red-light district of New Orleans, is a legendary name. It was in the saloons of Storyville that jazz was born. Around the year 1912 the photographer E.J. Bellocq, an enigmatic figure in New Orleans, found a compelling fascination with the women of the district. Bellocq's only work to have survived after his death are his portraits of the prostitutes. The glass plate negatives then came into the possession of the distinguished American photographer Lee Friedlander. In 1970 Friedlander's prints from these original glass plates were the subject of an exhibition and publication by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The museum book on Bellocq has long been out of print, but it has served as a source for the portrayal of this strange character in both film and literature. Little is known of Bellocq's life and less is known about his subjects, except they appear to be willing participants as the focus of Bellocq's interest. This new edition contains a number of previously unpublished photographs. Many of these are marked by the patina of their age, which gives them a heightened and evocative beauty. More than twenty-five years after the publication of the first Bellocq book, these scratched and corroded images suggest the manipulated surfaces of much contemporary photography, though they were photographed without contrivance in the back parlours of Storyville in the early years of the century.
