Antonio Bazzini (Brescia 1818-Milano 1897), violinista virtuoso nella prima parte della sua carriera, poi compositore soprattutto di musica cameristica e sinfonica, fu uno dei più influenti musicisti italiani del secondo Ottocento. Il Quartetto in do maggiore è il primo dei sei quartetti per archi che Bazzini compose in poco meno di trent'anni. Ottenne il primo premio alla prima edizione del concorso indetto nel 1864 dalla neonata Società del Quartetto di Milano. Ben accolto dalla critica fu presentato per la prima volta al pubblico milanese il 14 maggio 1865. Alla prima edizione della partitura, stampata da Ricordi per conto della Società del Quartetto tra la fine del 1864 e l'inizio del 1865, seguì a distanza di una ventina d'anni la pubblicazione delle sole parti staccate per i tipi della casa editrice Lucca, edizione che era stata erroneamente retrodatata al 1866 e che presenta lievi varianti rispetto alla partitura originale.
