Pilot Mountain loomed deceptively near to travelers crossing the Great Salt Lake Desert. Beginning in 1907, as a railroad camp, Wendover was the embodiment of the Wild West traditions of bootlegging whiskey and prostitution. The town hosted one of Nevada's first gambling establishments and the Golden Splice transcontinental telephone line was joined there in 1914. Ten years later the Victory Highway was hailed as a feat of engineering when it was constructed across the salt flats. Famous British racers joined Ab Jenkins' Mormon Meteor in setting land speed records in the 1930's which brought the salt flats international recognition. World War II bombers shook the ground as they roared above Wendover Bombing and Gunnery Range on their practice runs. The preparations at Wendover Field for the earth-shattering atomic bomb mission to Japah were among the most guarded, complicated, and intrique-filled secrets of the war. Today, the twin cities of Wendover, Utah, and West Wendover, Nevada, are split by state boundaries. They struggle to co-exist.
