BATAILLE, uno scrittore, antropologo e filosofo, medievista e paleografo, bibliotecario, surrealista dionisiaco, trotzkista, antifascista militante ma secondo alcuni affascinato dalle simbologie nazifasciste, esistenzialista, critico d'arte ecc.; figlio di Antoinette-Aglae Tournarde, la quale, per le crisi di follia del marito sifilitico cieco e paralitico, tentò due volte il suicidio, come narra Bataille in alcune pagine di ispirazione autobiografica del romanzo erotico HISTOIRE de l'OEIL che uscì con con lo pseudonimo di Lord Auch nel 1928. I due genitori erano atei e Bataille non venne mai educato a una specifica religione. Ossessionato dal sesso, ebbe crisi mistiche e nel 1917 era entrato addirittura in seminario. Esercitò notevoli influenze sui contemporanei ed è considerato uno degli scrittori più importanti del XX secolo (cfr. wiki). Uno dei "livres maudits".

Interesting letter to André Malraux, asking him on behalf of the publisher Albert Skira if he can use a phrase from Malraux's essay Les Voix du Silence for the publicity of a book by Bataille and suggesting a meeting, as they haven't seen each other in a long time: "J'ai été d'autant plus touché de votre mot que je me suis senti étroitement proche de vous en lisant Les Voix du Silence. Albert Skira, particulièrement heureux de votre appréciation, aimerait, si vous l'autorisez, utiliser une phrase pour la publicité. Je m'excuse de vous le demander, mais je ne pourrais guère me prétendre étranger aux préoccupations dont témoigne sa question. Il y a bien longtemps que nous ne nous sommes vus et si par hasard vous aviez un moment un jour de la semaine prochaine (du 22 au 29), que je passe à Paris, puis-je vous proposer de vous rencontrer ?" - Malraux drafted a response in red in the lower half of the second page, authorizing the use of a phrase and declining the meeting as he would return to Switzerland that same evening: "Cher G.B. je repars pour la Suisse ce soir. Mais que Skira emploie la phrase en question, s'il le croit utile: je me réjouis de tout ce qui peut servir votre livre. Soy. ass., cher G.B. de mon bien symp. souvenir". - Les Voix du silence is a collection of three essays on art and artistic creation that were first published individually by Albert Skira between 1947 and 1949 under the title La Psychologie de l'Art. The Gallimard publication of Les Voix from Silence from 1951 saw a reedition in 1956. No publication of Bataille with Skira is listed for 1956 but the request might still be connected to his 1955 publication on the prehistorical paintings of Lascaux entitled La peinture préhistorique. Lascaux ou la naissance de l'art. - Well preserved.
