Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper as follows: "With the regards of/ Jas. W. Bartlett." 12mo. [5]2-25p. Blue cloth with gilt letters on the front cover. Top edge gilt. Carl Herrmann Horsch [1822-1891] finished his medical education in the University of Prague in 1848 and served in the Saxon army as an assistant surgeon in the field hospital. In 1853, Horsch was offered a position by Dr. William Wesselhoeft in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1855 he settled in Dover, New Hampshire, where he spent the rest of his life in a large and successful practice. During the Civil War, Horsch served with the Fifthteenth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers. In 1882 he became a memberof the first state board of health in N.H., helped to organize it, and served in that capacity until ill health forced him to resign in 1886. He was a prominent member of the American Public Health Association and took special interest in matters of sanitation and public hygiene. Horsch died in 1891. Minor wear to extremities, covers have some stains, text block ever so slightly canted, gilt bright, else very good/ No jacket. Signed by Author(s).
