"Il s'agit de combattre les nouveaux efforts de l'esprit humain & les raffinements d'une cupidité qui prend un air de triomphe dont on n'a encore point vu d'exemple" (préface). Les bibliographies indiquent un quatrième volume, paru en 1772, dont le titre précise : "avec des nouveaux éclaircissemens pour servir de réponse au cinquième tome du Traité des prêts de commerce". Ce quatrième volume, publié ultérieurement, semble manquer à beaucoup d'exemplaires. Le tome 3 contient les douze "Lettres à un ami ou défense des théologiens." annoncées au titre et se termine par l'approbation et le privilège ; à la fin du tome 1 se trouve la "table générale des matières contenues dans les trois tomes". Le théologien-économiste J.-Barthélemy de La Porte est né à La Ciotat en 1699, mort en 1786. A very uncommon edition of this famous work first published in 1788. "It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Anacharsis in the development of French neo-classicism and in the creation of philhellenic sentiment. Though there had been earlier attempts to popularize and disseminate what was known of Greek antiquity, none had been as influential and successful in 'educating Europe to an appreciation of the life and "sensibility" of the ancient Greek' (Spenser). Barthelemy was keeper of the French national numismatic collections. He worked for 30 years on his chef-d'oeuvre, which achieved an immediate and international success.Barthhelemy's work has been reprinted many times in all formats" (Blackmer). (Cf. Sans la "Carte générale de la Grèce et d'une grande partie de ses colonies.", qui, commencée en 1798, ne fut publiée qu'en 1811 et, bien qu'elle s'y rattache, fait généralement défaut à l'édition de 1799, tout au moins aux exemplaires de cette édition reliés à l'époque.
