Centré sur la figure unique de l'Homme Dieu ou plutot du Dieu fait Homme, cet ouvrage, par les moyens conjugués de la reproduction en couleur et d'une mise en pages appropriée au texte de l'Evangile, se devait de garder a tous égards une unité. Il ne convenait donc pas de rassembler ici des oeuvres de genres par trop différents. On n'y trouvera que des fresques et des peintures sur bois. Leurs effets contrastés se marient, se complètent souvent, jamais ne jurent. En outre, celles que nous avons reproduites appartiennent toutes - sauf la main de Dieu du Maitre de Tahull - aux écoles italiennes. Elles s'échelonnent entre le Xie et le XV° siécle, époque par excellence de la grande peinture religieuse.
