The Byron Collection at the Museum of the City of New York is an archive of 22,000…photographs taken by The Byron Companya prominent New York photography studiobetween 1890 and 1942. The Byron photographers took as its subjects all manner of social life in and around New York; the collection includes private subjects (family portraits and home photographs), but the bulk of the collection documents public life and public institutions. . One of this collection's strengths is its documentation of institutions created during the Progressive Era to serve children. An abundance of photographs portray scenes at the Children's Aid Society, the Emanuel Lehman Foundation for crippled children, the New York Foundling Hospital, the New York Association for the Blind, and various other schools, hospitals, and orphanages. Viewers can see interior images demonstrating the daily activities of the children in these institutions. Even the titles of these organizations are sometimes worthy tools in the study of history: "The School For Feeble-Minded Children" is a noteworthy relic of a time before Americans became concerned with sensitive language.

From 1834 to 1895, Nathaniel Currier, first alone, then in partnership with James Merritt Ives, ran a firm of New York lithographers who produced over 7,000 lithographs, most of them scenes from contemporary American life. An early biographer called them "Printmakers to the American people," and that is exactly what they were. As Albert K. Baragwanath, Senior Curator of the Museum of the City of New York, writes in his introduction to this edition of Currier & Ives Favorites, "Their range was impressive: hand colored prints delineated the growth of the cities, the bucolic countryside, the romantic appeal of the pioneer and westward expansion, the life of the Indian, the era of the clipper ships, the new age of steam on rail and sea, and the panorama of America's historical past. Hunting, fishing, horse-racing, boxing and other sports of the day were documented. Relgious themes and portrayals of the rightness of temperance flourished. Hundreds of prints of pretty girls, children, fruits and flowers were published to decorate Victorian sitting rooms." Published before the invention of four-color printing presses, each Currier & Ives print was individually colored by hand. The skilled craftsmanship as well as the keenness of observation makes Currier & Ives prints among the most collectible Americana.
