Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Arno, Enrico - Decorative Illustrations (illustrator). 512 Pages. No defects noted to book and interior text pages are flawless. This is a reprint of the 1962 copyright. Le Morte D'Arthur was originally published by Caxton in 1485 and was the first coherent history of Arthur from his curious birth to his dramatic death. Malory put together a web of history, saga, and religious myth that had been spun in the Dark Ages to make a collection of tales that became a justly famous classic, but because of the elaborate and obscure nature of Medieval rhetoric it has been a book which everybody has heard of but few have been able to read. Baines has written a translation into modern idiom which faithfully preserves the sequence of events and which is complete and accurate, but is about one-half the original length. Here is the story of Arthur's magical birth, and of his accession after he had been the only one able to pull the sword from the stone. Here are the tales of his Knights of the Round Table, of Lancelot, Tristram, Galahad, and of their battles and their loves. Here is the story of his betrayal by his favorite knight Sir Lancelot with his queen, Gweneviere, and his downfall at the hands of his own bastard son Mondred. Here is the whole splendid story in complete and readable form. Keith Baines has said that he is principally a poet.
