Unsere frühesten Bildbeispiele stammen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, doch mit Sicherheit begann die Genese früher, und zwar mit der im Schoße des Feudalismus in einigen Teilen Europas bereits im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert einsetzenden Entwicklung der Städte. Die volle Ausprägung des architektonischen Typenreichtums vollzog sich allerdings erst mit der kampfreichen Etablierung des Stadtbürgertums als wirtschaftlich und politisch selbständige Kraft innerhalb der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft. Das trifft vor allen für Mittel- und Westeuropa zu, wo sich die Entfaltung der Produktivkräfte am raschesten und ungestört vom Eroberern vollziehen konnte. Weitere Teile Ost- und Südeuropas rücken erst Jahrhundertte später mit eigenen Beiträgen in unser Blickfeld, der Mongoleneinfall in Rußland und die türkische Besetzung des Balkans zu dieser zeitlichen Verschiebung entscheidend beitragen. Doch abgesehen davon wirkten beim Werden des Bürgerhauses auch in eng benachbarten Gebieten unterschiedliche Faktoren. Das einleitende Kapitel soll die wesentlichen Umstände aufzeigen, die nach dem Zerfall des karolingisch-fränkischen Imperiums zur Herausbildung des Bürgerhauses führten.
