Published to accompany an exhibition held at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, University of Leeds, Leeds, November 17, 2021 - April 2, 2022. This exhibition celebrates the work of British artists in the second half of the 20th century. Discover a crucial moment in the history of British art, a period where the influence of Abstract Expressionism in America was filtering across the Atlantic. The inspired British artists produced works on a new scale that embraced the possibilities of abstraction. They also developed new signature mark-making techniques. Explore the shared dialogue and formal concerns of these artists and trace their significant contribution to the development and history of British post-war art. The exhibition highlights paintings from the University of Leeds own outstanding collection. Alongside these examples of British abstract art are loans from across the country. Artists on display include Peter Lanyon, Roger Hilton, Gillian Ayres and Albert Irvin. The Expressive Mark is guest-curated by independent curator Anne Goodchild.

Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name held at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, 26 October 2021-5 March 2022. Sir William Henry Bragg, and his son Lawrence, changed the way we understand the world around us, all from a laboratory at the University of Leeds. Coinciding with the development of the new Sir William Henry Bragg building, and as part of the Bragg Cultural Programme, this exhibition reveals the story of Bragg's Nobel Prize winning work. Sir W.H. Bragg joined the University of Leeds in 1909 as the Cavendish Professor of Physics. It was here in Leeds where he undertook his pioneering research on X-rays and crystals, with his son Lawrence. They became the first, and so far only, father and son duo to be awarded the joint Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915. The prize was awarded for their work at Leeds, which involved the proposal of an equation which allowed the position of atoms within crystals to be determined from X-ray photographs. The equation is also known as Bragg's Law. Through outstanding objects from the University's Special Collections discover Bragg's pioneering work, and his continued legacy.

"First published in 2018, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery refurbishment and to coincide with the exhibition: Transformation, 19 April - 28 July 2018." 2018 marks ten years since the re-opening of the University's art gallery, following a major redevelopment and expansion. Renamed in honour of its long-term benefactors, The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery was launched on 6 March 2008. The enlarged and enhanced spaces the incisive vision of the Gallery's Keeper, Dr Hilary Diaper, made possible through the generosity of Audrey Burton enabled displays of the University Art Collection on a scale previously impossible. Ten years on from the Gallery's major transformation, it is an opportune time to consider what the Burton family have made possible. Not only did their benefaction support the creation of the gallery, but it also opened up a space for the University to engage a wide public with its art collection. Today, the Gallery is a site for research visits, teaching sessions, workshops with school groups, public talks and events. The decades of work by its first curators, Phyllis Winning and Hilary Diaper, to assemble and catalogue the University Art Collection converged with the physical development of the Gallery space and its team, enabling a rich and lively presentation of the University Art Collection for the public.
