Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 17 x 24.5 cm; 0.6 kg; 178 pages with colour illustrations; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Edge wear. Small tear at the bottom of the front cover. Minor signs of wear on the interior.; Includes loose errata.; This book has been written with the interests of the collector of Japanese porcelain of the period between the middle of the 17th century and the beginning of the 19th century in mind. In an historical survey an attempt has been made to set out the key events from three points of view: 1. The development of Japanese porcelain from the beginning of the 17th century on, the production of blue-and-white wares at Kyushu during the first five decennia, the invention of enamelling and the resulting polychrome wares from then on. 2. The fact that this development was seemingly perfectly timed to meet the needs of the foreign trade: the Portuguese pioneers penetrating the traditional Chinese trade area during the 16th century, the mighty enterprise of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) in the 17th century, the incredible amounts of Chinese porcelain shipped by them during the first half of that century and the export of Japanese ware from 1653 on, and finally the reorientation of the V.O.C. to Chinese porcelain. 3. All this observed against the background of the increasing influence of the Tokugawa Shogunate on artistic life inside Japan, the strong, traditional Chinese and Korean influences, present and appreciated for many centuries, being suppressed as a result of the isolationist policy and making way for a Japanese national consciousness and later on for European influences. An important chapter is devoted to the techniques of porcelain making in Old Japan. Attention has been paid to such aspects as types of kilns, clay-composition, firing processes, basic enamel-colours and - compositions, spur marks, etc. The description of the types of Japanese porcelain in Chapter III had of necessity to be limited to the general facts about and characteristics of blue-and-white ware, Imari ware, Kakiemon, Kutani ware and Nabeshima ware. It was argued that Hirado ware, which is only mentioned briefly as part of the section on blue-and-white ware, will not be available to the collector in the West while Satsuma ware is not considered a true porcelain. However during the last decennium or so, basic ideas about the origin of several types of Japanese porcelain have become the subject of discussion. The whole story of the Kakiemon genealogy and the first Kakiemons being the inventors of the enamelling technique in Japan is now genuinely doubted. Pieces that have always been clas- sified as Kakiemon are now indicated as Arita ware with polychrome enamels. In addition, many pieces previously categorized as 17th- century Kutani ware are now described as Arita ware decorated in Kutani-style. In several places in this book credit has been given to these new developments, which in the years to come may well change all earlier established opinions on this subject. The decorative motifs that appear on Japanese porcelain are described in Chapters IV through IX. No attempt has been made to describe all possible motifs, - that being impossible - but merely the most common ones. They are not only of prime importance for the appreciation of art in general, but they also contribute to a better understanding. The practical usefulness of the book is enhanced by the inclusion of full-colour photo- graphs of porcelains, which are mainly from private collections. Pieces from museums are presented only by way of exception and preference has been given here to objects not on permanent display. The well-known top pieces, far beyond the reach of the enthusiastic collector, have deliberately been avoided. Detailed comments are given on type, dating, decoration and special peculiarities. Around a hundred drawings, closely following the text, have been included to complete the picture for the reader.
