Arting This copy appears unread. Released by the Library of America on the occasion of Tarzan?s centenary. Timeless. ?In 1888, in a makeshift cabin at the edge of the West African rainforest, a child is born to Lord and Lady Greystoke, a castaway English diplomat and his young wife. After the doomed couple dies, their infant son is raised by the she-ape Kala, who calls the boy Tarzan - ?White-Skin? in the language of her tribe. As Tarzan reaches adulthood, his strength and agility, quickness of mind, and skill with his father's knife make him the most feared and respected creature in the jungle. But when he encounters others of his kind, including the beautiful Baltimore socialite Jane Porter, he embarks on a far-flung quest for his birthright - the ways of so-called civilized man.? Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Fred J. Arting (illustrator). 1st Edition. "Aunt Liza's "Praisin' Gate" by Effie Graham is a scarce 1916 Kansas-set work centered around Aunt Liza, an elderly disabled woman who had once been enslaved in Tennessee and now lives in Kansas. Written in period Black dialect, the book reflects the racial, regional, and social attitudes of its time, while also giving Aunt Liza a memorable voice, presence, and moral center. The title refers to her "Praisin' Gate," marked by a handwritten sign, which becomes part of the book's character and charm. The story carries strong Americana and Kansas regional interest, with themes touching on formerly enslaved people building lives in the West, community life, faith, dignity, humor, and the changing social world of the early 20th century. It also includes references to the women's suffrage movement, adding another layer of historical interest. Effie Graham herself is noted by rare-book sellers as a Kansas-connected writer, suffragette, and mathematics teacher, and this book was published by A.C. McClurg & Co. in 1916 with decorations/illustrations by Fred J. Arting. More than a century later, this first edition has somehow held on to all of it: clean boards, an attractive dust jacket, charming Fred J. Arting decorations (illudtrations) throughout, and the unmistakable presence of a book that has watched the world change from the Wilson administration onward. 196 pages. . This copy presents beautifully for its age. The book is in fantastic shape, The Dust Jacket has some chipping on the top and the bottom of the spine but the binding is intact, and the interior is clean with no writing, markings, only light, age-appropriate toning is present. A wonderful piece for collectors of early Graham titles, vintage illustrated literature, and turn-of-the-century Americana. Please review the attached photos for full condition details. Ships carefully packaged.".
Decoration by Fred J. Arting (illustrator). Very Good (covers bright on cover & spine; contents clean & tight but for small brown spot at bottom of first several pages). Pencil name of front endpaper "Myrtle Warrington" & tiny ink presentation from "LEB," dated 1916. 12mo., pictorial brown cloth, stamped in gilt & dark-brown First Edition. Signed by Graham on the half-title page. Black dialect stories set in Kansas. Graham was a suffragette and math teacher who was allegedly a friend of Mark Twain?s. Fred J. Arting did the illustrations for Edgar Rice Burrough?s ?Tarzan Of The Apes,? published by the same publisher, A.C. McClurg, in 1914. Signed.
