Walpole's edition reflects the period's pedagogical approach, combining the original Latin text with explanatory notes, vocabulary aids, and contextual essays such as 'The Roman Army.' The included engraved map of Gaul provides geographical context central to Caesar's campaigns. This example is particularly notable for its extensive period student use - marginalia, ownership inscriptions, and drawings - which together form a vivid record of classical education at the turn of the 20th century. Original cloth binding (publisher's gray-green boards with Macmillan emblem) in Poor condition: heavy soiling, staining, and edge wear; corners frayed; spine worn with visible weakness. Textblock remains largely intact but shows significant wear, including torn pages, losses (notably to one leaf), and age toning. The front pastedown and endpapers are filled with early handwriting and drawings, including repeated ownership signatures (notably 'T. A. Keelan' and 'Clem Brooke'), reference to 'Loyola College,' doodles, and pen trials. Marginal annotations and underlining appear throughout the text. The map is present and complete, though toned. A well-used but character-rich surviving relic of a late 19th-century educational setting. Edition statement: title page dated 1899; verso notes 'First Edition printed 1882' with multiple reprints listed, including 1899 (twice), indicating this is a later reprint within the original Macmillan educational series. Printed at the University Press, Glasgow (Robert MacLehose and Co.). Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 BCE) was a Roman general, statesman, and writer whose military campaigns expanded the Roman Republic. His Commentarii de Bello Gallico is both a historical account of his conquest of Gaul and a foundational text in Latin literature, valued for its clear prose and enduring use in classical education.
