Published by University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, 1961
Seller: Michael Laird Rare Books LLC, Lockhart, TX, U.S.A.
Condition: Very good. 36 pp. (8.5" x 11," mimeographed) + 1 brochure, preserved in individual sleeves, housed in contemporary Acco brown binder (worn, front cover with paper label removed, on which has been written "Hypnosis Notes," evidence of large removal inside front cover). Leaves toned, overall very good. FASCINATING, LIKELY UNIQUE COLLECTION OF MIMEOGRAPH LECTURE NOTES ON HYPNOSIS IN THE SERVICE OF THE HEALING ARTS, COMPILED IN 1961 EXPRESSLY FOR POSTGRADUATES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH. THE PRESENT COMPENDIUM IS A REMARKABLE RECORD OF THE STATE OF THE FIELD, AND SHOWS EXACTLY WHAT WAS BEING TAUGHT TO PHYSICIANS AND DENTISTS IN TRAINING NEARLY 65 YEARS AGO. As we learn from the enclosed brochure, the course was entitled "Medical-Dental Clinical Hypnosis" and was offered not only to physicians but to dentists (the class met at Scaife Hall of the Health Professions Department). The course was intended for "continuing education in the health professions." Outlined in the brochure is a schedule of ten lectures given by a number of the authors of the present ten texts who were staff members at the University of Pittsburgh. Nine staff members who took part in the seminar are listed along with their credentials. This compendium was evidently owned by a medical professional, likely a dentist, who took the course, and notes are featured on the verso of the text "Dental Applications of Hypnosis." One of the manuscript notes reads, "the procedure should be a cooperative one-the suggestions of the operator should be accepted without criticism. When, during [a] procedure, [the] patient breaks up (smiles, laughs) he is criticizing the suggestions of [the] operator." Another note reads: "Fast technique- relaxation spot on forehead-concentrate on spot-try to open eyes." THE TEXTS: "History of Hypnosis" by J. A. Weyandt, D.D.S. (5 pp.); "Dental Applications of Hypnosis" by F. D. Irwin, D.D.S. (2 pp.); "Visual Imagery" by Morton L. Aronson (2 pp.); "Eye Fixation as an Induction Procedure" (4 pp.); "Dangers and Termination of the Hypnotic State" by K. Thompson, D.D.S. (6 pp.); "Phenomena of Hypnotic State" (2 pp.); "Mechanisms of Hypnosis" by John E. Weber, M.D. (3 pp.); [A guided, thirteen-step exercise in hypnosis.] (2 pp.); "The Medical Uses of Hypnosis" by Kenneth F. Miller, M.D. (3 pp.); "Comments on Psychiatry" by Grosvenor B. Pearson, M.D. (6 pp.). The compendium concludes with the brochure noted above, and a one page bibliography that lists eight books relating to hypnosis; manuscript annotations comment on the merits or shortcomings of each work included in the bibliography (e.g., "not good dental"; "good induction technique"). MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED. CATALOGUER'S NOTE: We are gratful to Pico Banerjee for his work on the present volume.
