This is the copy that was given to then serving Congressman Estep. Harry Allison Estep (February 1, 1884 - February 28, 1968) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Purdue University. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1913. He was admitted to the bar in 1914 and commenced practice in Pittsburgh. He served as assistant district attorney of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, from 1917 to 1927. Estep was elected as a Republican to the Seventieth, Seventy-first, and Seventy-second Congresses. He resumed the practice of law until his retirement in 1964. He died in Oakland, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery. This Order of Battle provides outline histories of the American divisions which served in Europe during World War I. This copy was from the collection of Peter J. Linder of Ellicott City, Maryland. Peter J. Linder was educated at Princeton University (1949 AB) and Syracuse University (1954, MA). Peter served in the Army National Guard. He was an avid genealogist and performed extensive research on World War I casualties. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A wonderful association copy. This is a history of the formation of the American First Army under the direction of General Pershing. It consists of 58 pages of text, 9 appendixes and a bibliography. This copy belonged to Lieutenant-General Hugh A. Drum with his pencil signature on the front end paper. Lieutenant Colonel, at the time, Hugh Drum was named the First Army chief of staff in 1918, as noted on page 43. After the war, Drum served as the director of training and assistant commandant for the School of the Line at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and commandant of the Command and General Staff College where he taught the doctrine of open warfare that the American Expeditionary Forces had practiced in France. He later served as commander of the 1st Infantry Division from 1927 and as Inspector General of the US Army from 1930 to 1931. In 1931 Drum was promoted to Major General as commander of the V Corps Area, based at Fort Hayes, Ohio. Drum returned to Washington in 1933 to serve as Deputy to the Army's Chief of Staff, Douglas MacArthur. In 1938, Drum took command of the newly reactivated First Army and II Corps Area headquartered at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York. With the onset of preparations for World War II, Drum assumed command of the Eastern Defense Command, responsible for domestic defense along the Atlantic seaboard. He stayed there until he retired with the rank of Lieutenant-General. Fort Drum in New York is named after Hugh A. Drum. Signed by Subject. Book.
