XXIV, 653, (2) pp., 1 blank. -- Leather binding mit gold embossing and gold trim, spine with title panel. Interior covers with decorative blue endpaper. -- Front and back cover with the coat of arms of Marie Joséphine of Savoy (1753-1810). -- Very rare armorial binding of a well-known figure of French royalty. || Marie-Joséphine de Savoie was princess of France, and through her marriage to the future king Louis XVIII (Louis Stanislas Xavier, 1755-1824) also a countess of Provence. One notable fact about Marie Joséphine of Savoy is that, despite her position as the wife of Louis XVIII, she never became Queen of France - even though she was regarded as such by Bourbon royalist Legitimists. This is because she passed away in 1810, 4 years before her husband ascended the throne as Louis XVIII in 1814, following the fall of Napoleon and the Bourbon Restoration. Her life was marked by personal and political difficulties. She lived through the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, went into exile with her husband, and spent much of her later life in relative obscurity, moving between different European courts. Marie Joséphine was also known for her frail health and devout Catholic faith, and she reportedly led a somewhat melancholic and reclusive life during her exile. Her marriage to Louis XVIII was famously unhappy, and she was overshadowed by the events of the revolution and the Napoleonic era. Despite this, her connection to both the House of Savoy and the Bourbon dynasty placed her at the center of some of the most important political changes of her time. -- Binding slightly rubbed, otherwise in very good condition. // Wir, das Antiquariat Steffen Völkel, kaufen und verkaufen alte Bücher, Handschriften, Zeichnungen, Autographen, Grafiken und Fotografien. Woodcut armorial device (arms of Lorraine with ducal crown, flanked by eagles) (illustrator). First Edition (1708). Rare complete set of the Ordonnance de Là opold I, Duc de Lorraine et de Bar, promulgated at Lunà ville in November 1707 and printed in Nancy the following year by Paul Barbier, official printer to the duke. Là opold I, Duke of Lorraine (1679â"1729), restored to his duchy after the Treaty of Ryswick (1697), spent much of his reign rebuilding and reforming Lorraine after decades of French occupation. This Ordonnance represents a sweeping reform of judicial administration, addressing civil and criminal procedure, the duties of magistrates, the rights of the accused, appeals, and punishments. The work is divided into two parts (here bound separately in two volumes), and includes extensive articles governing local courts, appeals, and procedural justice. The text is printed in a clear Roman type, with woodcut ducal arms on the title pages. Provenance: early handwritten annotations on the title pages, likely by a contemporary magistrate (possibly âClaudii Barthà lemyâ noted in ink). This is an important witness to early 18th-century ducal law, preceding Lorraineâs full absorption into France (1766). Ink signatures/annotations on both title pages, possibly ownership or institutional marks from a Lorraine magistrate. Early shelf marks or notes relevant to legal practice. Fair to Good. Bindings rubbed with loss at headcaps, spines faded, boards scuffed, corners rounded. Text blocks clean, paper fresh with only light toning. Early annotations present on title pages. A solid, complete set in contemporary condition. Contemporary full calf, spines with raised bands, gilt-tooled compartments, faded titling (âOrdonn. de Là opoldâ). Bindings heavily worn with loss to headcaps, surface abrasions, rubbing to boards, corners rounded. Still intact, boards holding, text blocks sound.

[10 (misbound)], 284 [i.e. 283 (several mispaginated, some misbound)] [1 (woodcut ill.)]. [Complete]. A scarce Portuguese treatise on astronomy, navigation, and geography, with early references to America and Asia. Manoel de Figueiredo's Chronographia: Reportorio dos Tempos is a comprehensive work compiling astronomical, calendrical, navigational, and geographical knowledge, with references to America and Asia. It follows the tradition of earlier Iberian Reportorio dos Tempos, a type of encyclopedic work or almanac that combined astronomical, calendrical, and astrological knowledge. The book provides detailed descriptions of celestial motions, the structure of the universe, and divisions of time, including religious calendars with saints' feast days. Additionally, it discusses meteorological phenomena, eclipses and their astrological implications, as well as practical information on navigation, tides, and agricultural practices. Intended for a broad readership, it contributed to the widespread popularity of such works (Valleriani 2020). Figueiredo's Reportorio is distinguished by its integration of practical mathematical applications, including instructions on the construction and use of navigational instruments such as the balestilha (cross-staff) and geometric quadrants. His work was essential for pilots, scholars, and mariners, synthesizing practical navigation with theoretical knowledge. The book is structured into six main sections, covering Chronographia (chronology), Astronomia (astronomy), Geographia (geography), Astrologia (astrology), Computo Calendario (calendar calculations), and a sixth book (Do radio astronomico), dedicated to the fabrication and use of mathematical instruments such as the balestilha (cross-staff), a geometric quadrant, and various types of clocks. The text provides detailed solar and lunar cycle tables, designed for practical applications in calendar-making and eclipse prediction up to the year 1630. It explains the determination of longitude and latitude, essential for maritime navigation. Parts 2-6 are richly illustrated with corresponding woodcuts. The title page of the second part features a large woodcut armillary sphere, and the section is further illustrated with zodiac signs, figural representations of the planets, and other scientific diagrams. This chapter includes a large, nearly full-page world map depicting the classical division of the Earth into five climatic zones (f. 78r). America appears as a distinct landmass in the western hemisphere but is crudely shaped, while Asia is merged with Africa, showing prominent bodies of water on the continents. The Geographia section includes three smaller world maps: the first illustrating wind directions (f. 120v), the second explaining the Earth's spherical shape and its division into hemispheres (f. 128v), and the third likely indicating meridians and reference points (such as the Canary Islands and Cape Verde) for navigation (f. 140r). The Astrologia section contains a full-page illustration of the Zodiac Man, while the Computo Calendario section is illustrated with schematic moon faces representing different eclipse phases. The final section includes illustrations explaining the use of the cross-staff, the quadrant, and sundials. A significant portion of the Reportorio is devoted to geographical descriptions, offering insights into European knowledge of the world in the early 17th century. It describes the four known continents and references major colonial centers in the Americas, Africa, and Asia (ff. 208-209). Some charts indicate the start dates of the hottes.
