Jahrhundert auch kulturelle Strahlungszentren geworden - durch das Wirken von Äbtissinnen und Mystikerinnen wie Hildegard von Bingen, Hrotsvit von Gandersheim oder Teresa von Avila. 1993, als der Bildband erstmals erschienen ist, wurde er von Buchhändlern, Lesern und der Öffentlichkeit als Ereignis gefeiert. Die Zeitschrift 'EMMA' schrieb: 'Frau muss nicht Nonnenschülerin gewesen sein, um sich für Giorgio von Arbs Fotos in diesem Bildband zu begeistern', und die Monatszeitschrift 'Der Beobachter' ergänzte: 'Das Buch zu lesen, die Bilder zu betrachten kann selbst zu einem Stück Meditation werden - und zu einem Versuch, der Hatz der Welt, die Stille und Betrachtung entgegenzusetzen.'
