First Edition
Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Ansted, David Thomas (edited by) (illustrator). Presumed First Edition. 1867. Presumed first edition. xi, 313pp., a folding plan of Paris as a frontispiece, folding plan of the Paris Exhibition of 1867, numerous charts and plans of towns, railway map of France on the front endpapers and a catalogue on the rear endpapers. Black's Guides were travel guide books published by the Adam and Charles Black, beginning in 1839. The series' style tended towards the "colloquial, with fewer cultural pretensions" than its leading competitor Baedeker Guides. Contributors included David T. Ansted, Charles Bertram Black, and A.R. Hope Moncrieff. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and a few small patches of loss of colour on the front board. There is wear with a little damage to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are lightly bumped with wear to the cloth on the fore corners of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with mis-folding to the frontispiece plan of Paris. There is a little repaired damage to the rear fixed endpaper near the top spine corner and some thin partial splitting down the spine gutter of the front endpapers. There is no inscription.
