Scarce printed slipcase is present, albeit worn, with most of top strip lacking, but did do its job protecting the book itself that shows some age, otherwise Fine (see scans). Paper title labels to front upper board, and spine title complete. All corners sharp, Sewn Binding Tight. As above, Van Gelder Hand-made paper, with deckled edges. P/O to ffep., with some lightly pencilled (and easily erasable) notes in French. Rear flys have a long passage from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1882 critique of Villon, from "Familiar Studies of Men and Books". Once again, easily erasable if so desired. Limited, Second Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/In Slipcase. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

A one page manuscript sonnet authored by Algernon Swinburne, transcribed by a third party, and tipped into the last page of the the book with manuscript heading "In his last year A. Swinburne wrote to Dr. John Brown this sonnet, which seems something of the poet's prophetic gift or a voice."welcome home"-Andrew Lang". 2. A 4 pps letter written by the ex-housekeeper of the Fleming family, recalling Marjory as a little girl. She was the Fleming's maid from 1832 to 1853. 3. 3 period photos; one of Kirkaldy, one of a waterfall. 4. A sketch of the grave of Marjory, tipped into the book. 5. A removed 1888 magazine article by Humphrey about Marjory, annotated in her hand. 6. A tipped in printed portrait of Dr Brown, inscribed "given me by his publisher friend Taylor.Dr John Brown". The book was owned by Humphrey, as it is signed on the inside front cover by her "Frances Amerlia Humphrey, Edinburgh, 1888". There are annotations and some tipped-in ills. of notable English authors with inscriptions below, probably by Humphrey. A nice little collection showing some degree of connection between Brown, The Flemings, Lang, Humphrey and Swinburne. Book.
