Flensteds Verlag, selbst in Andersens Geburtsstadt Odense (Dänemark) beheimatet, ist es vor kurzem gelungen, Prof. Dr. Werner Wolf (Äbo, Finnland), den namhaften Kenner der skandinawischen Literatur, dazu zu bewegen, eine völlige Neuübertragung der Märchen unmittelbar aus dem dänischen Urtext vorzunehmen. Auswahl und Einrichtung dieser Ausgabe stammen von Svend Larsen, dem Direktor des Hans Christian Andersen-Museums in Odense. Dieser erste Band "Andersens Märchen" wurde mit den Originalzeichnungen Vilhelm Pedersens, des besten Andersen-Illustrators seiner Zeit, geschmückt. Als der aus Dänemark stammende Leipziger Verleger Carl B. Lorek Andersen bat, ihm für die in Deutschland 1849 erscheinende Ausgabe seiner Werke einen geeigneten lllustrator zu nennen, wählte der Dichter selbst V. Pedersen als den ihm gemäßesten, besten. Bis zu seinem Tod 1859 hatte Pedersen über 200 Zeichnungen entworfen, deren Mehrzahl heute dem Andersen-Museum in Odense angehört. Ursprünglich wurden sie in Form von Holzschnitten wiedergegeben, konnten jedoch hier direkt nach den Originalen reproduziert werden und unterstreichen so in zarter, feinfühliger Weise den gegebenen Text." (Verlagstext) Hans Christian Andersen (* 2. April 1805 in Odense; gestorben 4. August 1875 in Kopenhagen) ist der wohl berühmteste Dichter und Schriftsteller Dänemarks. Hans Christian Andersen wurde als Sohn des verarmten Schuhmachers Hans Andersen (1782-1816) und der alkoholkranken Wäscherin Anne Marie Andersdatter (ca. 1775-1833) geboren. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters ging er mit 14 Jahren nach Kopenhagen und bemühte sich, dort als Schauspieler zum Theater zu kommen. Nachdem ihm das jedoch nicht gelang, versuchte er sich ebenso vergeblich als Sänger und verfasste schon erste kleine Gedichte. Die Märchen erschienen bereits um 1840 in unterschiedlichen deutschen Übersetzungen. Angelehnt an dänische, deutsche und griechische Sagen und historische Begebenheiten, dem Volksglauben verbunden und inspiriert von literarischen Strömungen seiner Zeit, schuf Andersen so die bedeutsamsten Kunstmärchen des Biedermeier. Andersens Märchen sind nicht nur zeitlos; sie gehören mittlerweile zur Weltliteratur. Weniger bekannt sind viele seiner 156 weiteren Märchen. Auch die autobiografischen Texte, Novellen, Dramen, Gedichte und Reiseberichte, die von seinem Schaffensreichtum zeugen, führen ein Schattendasein. Auch als Romancier ist Andersen kaum bekannt: 1835 erschien sein erster Roman "Der Improvisator", den er während eines Italien-Stipendiums schrieb, 1848 "Die beiden Baroninnen", eine Waisenkind-Geschichte. In den dreißiger Jahren des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts fand der junge Dichter in Deutschland größere Anerkennung als in seinem eigenen Vaterland.
