Fully illustrated with 2 tipped-in colour plates and one folding colour illustration and 28 b/w drawings. First edition of this book famous published by Henri Vetch in Peiping in 1936, scarce. The second revised edition, limited to 1000 copies, was published in Hong Kong in 1965.

Volume I, published by PUP in 1952 is the second English language edition; it was previously published by Henri Vetch, Peiping in 1937. Volume II, published in 1953, is the first English language edition (this was never published by Henri Vetch). Fung Yu-lam's original Chinese language editions were published in Shanghai in 1931 and 1934 respectively, and both were translated into English by Dirk Bodde. Quartos, pp xxxiv, 455 + folding map; xxv, 783. Bound in blue cloth covered hard boards, gilt to spines and in the original publisher's dust jackets, both price clipped. The books are in just about Fine condition, volume II has a small bookseller's sticker to the front paste-down (Arthur Probsthain). The jackets are in Very Good condition, no loss, chipping or tears, but the spines are faded, more so to Volume II. [note also that although Princeton is the publisher noted on the title page of both volumes, they have George Allen & Unwin to the tail of the spines and the jackets are mixed, one from each publisher].
