Add to basketHalf Leather. Condition: Very Good binding. Wright and Buckingham's historical descriptions of various places in Belgium, the Rhine, Italy, Greece, and the Shores and Islands of the Mediterranean, with engraved illustrations by various artists. Complete with two volumes bound in one. Vol. I is complete with all 73 plates called for in the 'Contents,' though "Great Canal, and Antique Gothic House" [or "Ghent"] is bound in at Vol. II, p. 58, and "The City of Catania and Mount Etna" is bound in near Vol. II, p. 152. Vol. II is lacking pp. 25-32, and pp. 49-56, and also lacks the eight plates that would have been in those two signatures. This is quite possibly a binder's error, as there does not appear to be any explicit damage to the textblock at those locations; the binder also misplaces a number of plates, though most of these errors are simply a few pages off. Vol. I with all 73 plates. Vol. II with 73 of the 81 plates. Altogether with 146 of the 154 plates, which includes the frontispieces and additional title pages, engraved. Some foxing to the plates; previous owners' names on the front pastedown and recto of the initial frontispiece lacking front endpaper. Surface wear to the joints, spine, and corners of the boards. Some soiling to the cloth covered boards. Half brown leather with designs in blind, decorative gilt rules, and gilt lettering, and gray cloth covered boards. Very Good. Very Good binding.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Four volumes, black leather spines & corners over marbled paper-covered boards, gilt decorations and lettering to spines, 10-7/8? x 8-3/4", all plates present, I: 72 + 96 pp. (32 plates), II: 72 pp. (32 plates), III: 68 pp. (32 plates), IV: 56 pp. (32 plates). In each volume, one of the plates is the vignette on the engraved title page. Rubbing to edges of boards, minor repair work to spines. Main flaw is foxing to volume 4 which affects some plates; endpapers have vertical creases from accidental folding. +++++Thomas Allom (1804-1872) was a British architect, topographer, and artist. He traveled widely and produced popular books of views of England and Constantinople. For this book on China, however, it seems unlikely that he ever traveled to China. Instead, he relied on works by previous artists. +++++In the eighteenth century, Britain was concerned about their trade deficit with China. However, the East India Company discovered that they could run opium from India to China, and, once the population was addicted to the drug, the trade imbalance was tilted in England?s favor. British imports of opium to China rose from 200 chests (about 140 pounds) in in 1729 to 40,000 chests in 1838. (That?s 5.6 million pounds of opium. According to the UN, the current street price in China for opium is about $1.80 per gram, which means the UK was delivering the equivalent of $5.6 billion in drugs.) +++++In the late 1830s, China and Britain faced off over China?s increasing crackdown on the opium traffic. It eventually led to the First Opium War of 1839-1842, which ended with the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, giving Hong Kong to the British, forcing China to increase foreign trade, and allowing the continued opium deliveries to China. +++++Thus, the English appetite for knowledge of China was at a peak when Allom produced this book in 1843. Even though Allom produced more of an anthology of art than first-hand impressions, it remained an extremely popular and influential book, and helped form England?s view of China. +++++Extra postage required for international or expedited shipping.

Add to basketFour volumes 28.3 x 22 cms, 4 engraved vignette title-pages and 124 black and white engravings after drawings by Thomas Allom, 72 + 96 pages; 72 pages; 68 pages; 56 pages; contemporary half morocco over pebbled cloth boards, spines gilt lettered with raised bands and decorated in compartments, all edges gilt, morocco a trifle rubbed and scant foxing affecting one of the title pages and a handful of plates, but a very good remarkably clean set, the fine engravings bright with great depth of tone. A very handsome example of an influential work. The fine illustrations are by Thomas Allom (1804-1872), who at the time of this publication was a well-known and highly regarded topographical artist, having produced a series of English views as well as illustrating celebrated works on Turkey and the Middle East. The author of the text (who gets second billing) the Rev'd George Newenham Wright (c. 1794?1877) was an Irish writer and Anglican clergyman who had never travelled to China and despite Allom's travels to Turkey and the Middle East there is no convincing evidence to suggest that he ever made it there either. Wright's text was drawn from his research performed at the British Library, and Allom's illustrations drew on earlier works. The majority of the views show southern China, including images of Hong Kong, Canton and Macao, reflecting the limited British access to China at the time. However, there are also some images and descriptions of Peking, Nanking and Jehol visited by the Macartney Embassy almost fifty years before. Very popular at the time of publication, "China Illustrated" answered a European demand for news of the "exotic Orient" and it gives keen insight into British attitudes towards China in the early 19th Century. It ran to a number of editions including a German edition in 12 parts with smaller plates which appeared shortly after the English edition. Cordier 80-81; Lust 363; Lowendahl 986.

Contemporary full pebble-grained red morocco, sides richly gilt with foliate panel design, spines in six compartments with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In total 128 steel-engraved plates including 4 engraved vignette title-pages, all with tissue guards. I: pp. 96, with additional engraved title ('China, its scenery, architecture, social habits, &c. illustrated') and 31 plates; II: pp. 72, with additional engraved title and 31 plates; III: pp. 68, with additional engraved title and 31 plates; IV: pp. 56, with additional engraved title and 31 plates. Light foxing to some of the plates, a little toned, some light shelfwear, overall a very good copy in particularly handsome red morocco bindings. Thomas Allom (1804-1872) the noted topographical artist, at a time of increased interest in China, presented the Western world with the most complete portrait of China and Chinese culture up to the middle of the nineteenth century. Captioned in English, French and German, the plates encompass Hong Kong, Beijing, Nanjing, Macao, Guangzhou, and Xiamen, among other locations, and depict, inter alia, harbours, temples, palaces, mountains and rivers, military engagements, punishments, the cultivation of tea and rice and the manufacture of silk, the Great Wall of China, cat merchants, and 'playing at shuttlecock with the feet'. As well as his own observations, Allom includes some images based on the work of earlier artists such as Lieutenant Frederick White, R.M., Captain Stoddart, R.N. and R. Vaughan. The text was by George Wright, a protestant missionary who had spent a considerable time in China. Cordier 80-81; Lust 363; Lowendahl 986.
