Sam Wood (1883-1949), born July 10, 1883, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died September 22, 1949, Hollywood, California; American director, in business before becoming assistant to Cecil B. De Mille in 1915. Directing from 1920. "A Night at the Opera" 1935; "A Day at the Races" 1937; "Gone With The Wind" 1939 (assisting Victor Fleming); "Goodbye Mr. Chips" 1939; "Kitty Folye" 1940; "Pride of the Yankees" 1942; "Kings Row" 1942; and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" 1943. Sam Wood directed 11 actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Robert Donat, Greer Garson, Martha Scott, Ginger Rogers, Charles Coburn, Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Katina Paxinou, Akim Tamiroff, Ingrid Bergman and Flora Robson. Donat, Paxinou and Rogers won Oscars for their performances in one of Wood's films.
