Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the religious tensions that shaped the early history of Maryland, a colony founded by the Calvert family as a haven for English Catholics. Despite its intended purpose, the colony became a battleground between Catholics and Puritans, each seeking political and religious dominance. The Puritans, who emerged victorious, used their power to disenfranchise Catholics, leading to a struggle for civil equality that would shape the colony's future. Through a close examination of primary sources, the author sheds light on the complex interplay between religious belief, political power, and the quest for individual liberty in colonial America, providing valuable insights into the foundations of religious freedom and the enduring legacy of religious strife in the United States. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex religious and political landscape of early Maryland through the lens of the Catholic and Puritan settlers. The author challenges the long-held belief that the Catholic Calvert family founded Maryland as a safe haven for Catholics, arguing instead that their primary motivation was economic. The book delves into the history of religious persecution in England, particularly the struggle between the Crown and the Puritans. It examines how these tensions played out in Maryland, where Catholics initially enjoyed tolerance but were later disfranchised by the Puritan-dominated government. The author analyzes the political and social conflicts between the Catholic and Puritan communities, culminating in the Battle of the Severn, which resulted in the defeat of the Catholic stronghold of St. Marys and the establishment of Annapolis as the provincial capital. The book argues that the religious toleration practiced by the Catholic settlers in Maryland was groundbreaking for its time and laid the foundation for the principle of religious freedom in the United States. It also highlights the role of the Puritan settlers in shaping Maryland's political landscape and their lasting impact on the struggle for civil liberties. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
