The book shows wear and the decorated red cloth (?) covering the boards is missing from the spine which is intact, Note: backstrip missing may have been rejointed, no title label; pages show damp staining in places. No written comments (other than owner's name Penhaligon) or writing on pages. The patterned red board covers front and back both contain a circular stamp in the same colour. It reads "Bohn's Scientific Library." This is a rare book from the mid 19th century. Contains an 8 page index plus 32 page "Select Catalogue of New Books at Reduced Prices." May have had gilt edging top leaves but these are worn and black, side edges Contains Art nouveau bookplate of John Medley Doble, dated 1881 with the motto "amari aliquid" (something to be loved), by Harry Soane, sc. London.

The pages are, too a varying degree age spotted there are penciled in notes on the insides of both covers. the covers themselves are not too bad, its the edges that have been heavily worn. Lastly the book binding process appears to have partially involved sewing the pieces together, and while that seems to have held up its noticeable.

Cosmos was Alexander von Humboldt's effort, late in his life, to produce a comprehensive description of the natural world and the history of science. There are five total volumes, the fifth of which was unfinished at the time of Humboldt's death and published posthumously from his notes. This set lacks that fifth, unfinished volume, and contains the first four, which were completed and published during Humboldt's life. Additionally, E. C. Otte's translation was the only English translation of Cosmos at the time not to remove any passages from the original German volumes, and thus represents the only complete contemporary translation of the work. 1400841.
