First Edition
A visually rich behind-the-scenes chronicle of the final season of the landmark television series MASH, featuring photography by Arlene Alda with reflective commentary by Alan Alda, who portrayed Captain Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce and directed numerous episodes of the series. The volume documents the closing months of production of one of television's most influential and beloved shows, including candid photographs of the cast and crew, production moments on set, storyboards and sketches, and reflections on the emotional process of concluding the historic series. The book captures both the humor and the poignancy surrounding the end of the program, culminating in the famous 1983 finale, one of the most watched broadcasts in television history. Published by The Unicorn Publishing House in New Jersey and printed in Japan by Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd., the book reflects the high-quality photographic reproduction typical of early 1980s illustrated television retrospectives. The copyright page lists İ1983 Arlene and Alan Alda. Book Near Fine. Oblong softcover binding tight and square; covers bright with light surface wear typical of handling. Interior pages clean and bright with no markings observed. Photographic plates crisp and well preserved. Laid-in ephemera: Two interesting pieces of ephemera accompany the book: A vintage newspaper clipping photograph depicting members of the MASH cast. The clipping appears to be from period coverage of the series' final season or finale and provides a small piece of contemporary media context for the show's conclusion. Also found is a small handwritten autograph note signed by country music star Mickey Gilley. Mickey Gilley (1936-2022) was a major figure in American country music who scored 17 No. 1 country hits and became widely known through the Urban Cowboy cultural movement of the early 1980s. The film Urban Cowboy was set in his famous Pasadena, Texas nightclub, Gilley's, and featured his recording of 'Stand by Me,' which brought him crossover pop success. While not directly related to the book's subject, the autograph and clipping add interesting period provenance reflecting the broader entertainment culture of the early 1980s. Arlene Alda (b. 1933) is an American photographer, writer, and musician whose work has appeared in numerous exhibitions and publications. Her documentary-style photography often focuses on everyday life and cultural moments. Alan Alda (b. 1936) is an award-winning actor, writer, and director best known for his portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce on MASH. Over the course of the series he won multiple Emmy Awards and later became widely known for his work in film, theater, and science communication.
