Seller: LIBRARY OF THE SOUTH, Gallatin, TN, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES by Albert H. Stephens (Volume I only ) is offered from a private library collection. FREE SHIPPING within contiguous U.S. This is the first half of a two-volume set by Alexander H. Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederacy. The full official title is A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States (1868). It is one of the most famous legal defenses of the Southern position ever written. 1. What the Book is About (Volume 1): While Volume 2 focuses on the military and social aspects of the war, Volume 1 is almost entirely a philosophical and legal argument. The Setting: Stephens writes the book as a series of "colloquies" (imaginary conversations) taking place at his home, Liberty Hall, between himself and three fictional Northern guests. The Argument: He argues that the United States was a "compact" of sovereign states, not a single unified nation. He asserts that the states never gave up their ultimate sovereignty, making secession a legal right rather than a rebellion. Historical Significance: This book is credited with popularizing the term "The War Between the States" as an alternative to "The Civil War" or "The Rebellion."
