Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Patricia Davey (Jacket design) (illustrator). First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1963. The book was also published in the USA by Alfred A. Knopf. Translated from the French into English by Philip Thody. Dustwrapper design by Patricia Davey. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked, without any scuffs, rubbing or creasing - just slight creasing to the top and tail of the spine. Corners sharp. Top edge of page block stained red by the publisher, and still very bright and clean. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally the book is also very good, with clean pages - just a neat ownership name in ink to the front free endpaper. None of the usual foxing to the endpapers, and no internal foxing. No creases or tears. Pages beautifully clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good colour-printed dustwrapper, which has been corner price-clipped, with a scuff tear where a price sticker has been removed at the bottom of the flap. The dustwrapper is largely complete, with just some slight loss and rubbing at the top and bottom edges of the spine, and with a 3cm closed tear with associated creasing at the top edge of the back panel near the spine. The edges of the dustwrapper are slightly creased and rubbed, especially to the edges of the spine, and there is some discolouration to the back panel, which is white, and which is marked and browned with age. The spine of the dustwrapper is not faded at all and retains the dark maroon colour. ***222mm x146mm. 153 pages including Biographical Note, Appendix A: Newspaper Articles published by Camus between 1938 and 1940, Appendix B: Plays performed by the Theatre du Travail, later the Theatre de l'Equipe, between 1935 and 1939, List of abbreviations, Notes on the Introduction, Notes on the 'Carnets'. ***'From 1935 until his death, Albert Camus kept a general literary diary which he called his Carnets. There, he noted ideas for future works, extracts from books he had read, conversations overheard in the street, and reflections on travel, death, loneliness and art'. The Carnets are translated in a complete and unabridged from the original French edition based directly on the manuscript copy which Camus himself had made before his death. The Carnets are an invaluable addition to the other volumes of Camus' work at present available in translation. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Albert Camus, born 7 Nov 1913 - died 4 Jan 1960, was a French philosopher, author, and journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44 in 1957, the second youngest recipient in history.' (Wiki) ***A very good copy of the first UK edition of Albert Camus' "Carnets 1935 - 1942." Uncommon now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First edition, first printing. Published by Hamish Hamilton in London, 1957. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper has some slight curling and tearing along the top edge. It has not been price clipped and shows the original 18s. net price. There are some small pen annotations to the front flap, marking page numbers of interest to the previous owner. The boards are tight and free from notable chips and marks, but with a band of minor sunning at the tail of the spine. The internals are clean throughout and the text blocks, though with some slight spotting to the side edge. The wraparound band, outlining Camus' 1957 Nobel Prize win is slightly sunned, though not chipped or marked. Overall, this is a near fine copy with the scarce band. This book offers an evaluation of Albert Camus, leading novelist and a pioneer of existentialism. The editor Philip Thody analyses Camus' development as a prose writer and the creation of such classics as 'The Stranger'.
