Some minuscule edge wear to top of jacket and spine, not price clipped (£18.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unopened, unread. 204pp, illustrate…d. Mistress Peachum was Lavinia Fenton (Powlett, 1708-70), an eighteenth century actress who was the original Polly Peachum in John Gay's play 'The Begger's Opera' and became the Duchess of Bolton. Raised in a Charing Cross coffee house Lavinia nearly fell victim to the ambitions of her mother, who plotted the sale of her virginity to an elderly gentleman for two hundred pounds, but Lavinia was determined to live her life on her own terms. She became an actress, and though she was a newcomer to the stage when she was chosen to star as Polly, her combination of a sweet voice, a pretty face and a knowledge of the seamier side of London life made the role her own. Both Lavinia and the play were overnight sensations, but she enjoyed only a few months of fame before she caught the eye of the Duke of Bolton, a married, indolent and childless aristocrat. The Duke was determined to make her his mistress, and she agreed to elope with him, exchanging the rackety glamour of life as London's most celebrated actress for twenty years of retirement. Lavinia gave the Duke three sons, but when she was left a widow she chose her own way once more, and scandalously threw away their fortunes on her younger lover. Lisa Hilton's ebullient portrait of Lavinia Fenton's aspirational life is also a scintillating depiction of the age. With a cast of politicians and pickpockets, highwaymen and whores, it illuminates the relationship between the theatre and the social and political climate of eighteenth century London. Jacket after William Hogarth (illustrator).

The paintings and engravings of William Hogarth, the subject of this biography, have always been popular, but outside art history little is known about his life. He moved in the worlds of theatre, literature, journalism and politics, and found subjects for his work over the whole gamut of 18t -century London, from street scenes to drawing rooms, and from churches to gambling halls and prisons. Hogarth was made wealthy by his engravings for 'The Harlot's Progress', 'tThe Rake's Progress' et al, but remained highly critical of the growing gulf between the luxurious lives of the ruling elite and the wretched poverty of the masses. Swift described him as a 'pleasant rogue', and he numbered the likes of Pope and Horace Walpole among his friends. Quite a scarce book. Jacket and illustrations after William Hogarth (illustrator).

Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg…+ copy. 418pp, illustrated. In 1732, a blasphemous burlesque of the Christian Atonement was published in England without comment from the government or the Church of England. In 'Hogarth's Harlot' Professor Ronald Paulson explains this absence of official censure through a detailed examination of the parameters of blasphemy in eighteenth century England and the changing attitudes toward the central tenets of the Christian Church among artists in this period. Discerning a profound spiritual and cultural shift from atonement and personal salvation to redemption, incarnation, and acts of charity and love, Paulson focuses on such influential factors as English anti popery and anti Jacobitism, as well as the ideas of the English Enlightenment. Offering imaginative and deeply informed readings of a wide range of artistic works, engravings by Hogarth, poems by Milton, Pope, Christopher Smart and Blake, plays by Nicholas Rowe and George Lillo, paintings and sculptures by Benjamin West, John Zoffany, Joseph Wright of Derby, and Louis François Roubiliac, and oratorios by George Frederic Handel, Paulson explores the significance of the medium in which artists produced 'sacred parody' and how these works both reflected and influenced attitudes toward the nature of Christianity in England. As England's faithful began to worry less about everlasting felicity in heaven and more about life on earth, these diverse artists provided them with new ways of thinking about both their spiritual and their social existence. Quite a scarce book. Jacket after William Hogarth (illustrator).

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Size: Sheet size 33 x 52 cm, Print images excluding letters 24.5 x 19 cm (Beggar's Opera) and 21 x 18 cm (British Stage) Condition: Very good condition, light line of dirt in margin of A Just View. The prints have never been framed. Published by: Baldwin Cradock and Joy, 1835-1837 (original engr…avings c1728 and c1724) These prints are both copies of early 18th century engravings which were both for many years attributed to William Hogarth, the great British satirical artist. The Beggar's Opera print is now considered not to be by Hogarth. The prints are close copies of the existing prints, the original copper plates having been lost, made probably about 1800. Both prints are satirical views of the management of British Plays. The Beggar's Opera print is from an engraving made in 1728, the year The Beggar's Opera was first performed. See Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works 1989, page 34. The other print is fully titled "A Just View of the British Stage, or Three Heads are Better Than One", and Hogarth's original was engraved in 1724. It includes an engraved explanation. Both prints are vicious and complex in their satire, and further details and explanation can be found online and in Paulson's book. This copy of the prints is from the 1827 Baldwin Cradock and Joy publication of Hogarth's works.
