Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Glasgow: Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks, 1998. AS NEW - Signed/Dated/Hand Numbered by McLean - 13 September 2002. "Three Dreams on the Transmutation of Metals issued as number 27 in the Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks series, has been produced in a limited edition of only 300 copies, printed and bound by hand by Adam McLean". From the Publisher : "This series of limited edition hand-bound books by Adam McLean were initially produced between 1979 and 1986. They were never sold through book dealers, but only by direct mail order. Consequently, these books became collectors items, often fetching high prices on the second-hand market. This remarkable book written in the last half of the 16th century is an elaborate extended allegory in the form of three dreams. Through these the author is taken on strange journeys in which he meets various symbolic figures who lead him to realise the errors, deceptions and falsehoods of alchemy. He is guided by Bernard of Treviso towards an understanding of where the alchemical truth lies. This is one of the key allegories of alchemy. It appeared very early in alchemical publishing. Although written in Italian and never translated into Latin, this work must have influenced the explosion of the allegorical alchemy that appeared in the early 17th century. It draws upon the Hypnerotomachia (Dream of Poliphilus) printed in 1499, Nazari having the same fascination for elaborate descriptive detail of architecture and landscape. This is the first ever translation of this previously obscure work. Few will have heard of this work before, but this is truly one of the hidden gems of alchemical allegory. This book has a number of woodcut illustration that have become quite well known recently. Limited edition of 300 signed and numbered hardbound copies. 147 pages. Illustrations." . First Edition Limited. Hardcover/Hand Made by McLean. As New. Illus. by Woodcuts, Diagrams, Table, etc. 8vo size - 8½" tall. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Glasgow: Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks, 1998. AS NEW - Signed/Dated/Hand Numbered by McLean - 16th December 1998. "The Hermaphrodite Child of the Sun and Moon issued as number 26 in the Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks series, has heen produced in a limited edition of only 300 copies, printed and bound by hand by Adam McLean". From the Publisher : "This series of limited edition hand-bound books by Adam McLean were initially produced between 1979 and 1986. They were never sold through book dealers, but only by direct mail order. Consequently, these books became collectors items, often fetching high prices on the second-hand market. The Hermaphroditische Sonn- und Monds-Kind was printed at Mainz in 1752. Although the text is relatively obscure and impenetrable, the power of the series of twelve engravings attracted people to this work, and the fascination of these images still remains with us today. The work was reprinted twenty seven years later in the well known German alchemical compendium Hermetisches A.B.C. The work is divided into twelve sections each headed by an emblematic figure. The text of these sections begins with an 'explanation of the figure', followed by a short verse, a 'paragraph' with its 'explanation', and lastly a 'canon' or short verse with its 'explanation'. The main focus of this present book is to provide for the first time a translation of the text into English, and to suggest ways in which the symbolic sequence of this work can be explored. This series has often been reproduced in modern books on alchemy, though no one seems to have attempted to interpret the work. The engravings contain many familiar alchemical figures, the green lion, the raven or black crow, the white swan, the ouroboros, suns and moons in abundance, but it is not easy to tease out an interpretation or find a clear path through the symbols. In writing his commentary on the Hermaphrodite Child of the Sun and Moon, Adam McLean has adopted the approach he has taken in his other commentaries to works with emblematic sequences in the Magnum Opus editions - he exposes the structures underlying the symbolism in the emblem sequence rather than rigorously analysing the text. Mike Brenner has done us all a great service by undertaking this translation. Some of the language is rather challenging, and it is difficult to find the exact terms in modern English for some of the abstruse concepts in this eighteenth century alchemical work. This book also includes the original German text, so that people who know German can make their own alternative reading of passages. Limited edition of 300 signed and numbered copies. 112 pages.". Translated by Fiona Tait; Edited with an Introduction by Adam McLean; Limited edition of 250 copies signed, dated and numbered by Adam McLean; Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No. 4; Hand-Bound in simulated brown leather with gilt spine title; Plates are not colored; 65 pages. Daniel Cramer's Emblems were issued in 1617 during the height of Rosicrucian publishing under the title 'The True Society of Jesus and the Rose Cross'. The work was published by the well known Rosicrucian publishing house of Lucas Jennis of Frankfurt. The 40 emblems, arranged in four 'decades', are an eloquent expressions of a meditative process centred upon a mystical contemplation of the heart of man. Each emblem has a title, a verse from the Bible, and two lines of explanation added below, but the symbolism of the engravings speaks for itself. We see the symbol of the heart undergoing various processes, experiencing certain aspirations or emotions, or being purified through spiritual and alchemical operations. It would seem that this emblem book was intended as a simple statement of the Rosicrucian philosophy in a form which could be grasped through imaginative working with symbols, rather than through abstract intellectual philosophy. As with many of the Rosicrucian books, it stood outside its time and seems not to have made a definite impact on the world of the early 17th century; however, the archetypal symbols still speak directly to us, even some 350 years later, and the content of these emblems remains a valuable tool for meditation. Cloth bound in very good condition; Spine titles mostly worn off.

Condition: Cloth bound in fine condition. Limited edition of 250 copies signed, dated and numbered by Adam McLean; Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No. 18; Hand-Bound in simulated brown leather with gilt spine title; With text of the 1690 Foxcroft translation, revised and modernized, with extracts from the original German edition translated by Donald MacLean; 127 pages. The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz is well known as the major piece of early Rosicrucian writing. It is in the form of an allegorical romance, with a well-paced plot that captures the interest of the reader, and through the medium of allegory, conveys the essential esoteric philosophy underlying Rosicrucianism. Although the text in a 17th century English translation has been available recently in various publications, it really needs a commentary to help unravel the elaborate threads of esoteric ideas that form its fabric.

RARE - "The Rosary of the Philosophers special [Hand] coloured edition has been produced as an edition bound by hand and limited to 100 copies only [of which 75 are for sale]". From the Publisher : "This series of limited edition hand-bound books by Adam McLean were initially produced between 1979 and 1986. They were never sold through book dealers, but only by direct mail order. Consequently, these books became collectors items, often fetching high prices on the second-hand market. A new edition of the Rosarium philosophorum originally published in the Magnum Opus series in 1980 but long out of print. This is one of the key early printed books on alchemy, and is a very important summary of many of the ideas current in 15th and early 16th century alchemy. For this edition my 1980 transcription of manuscript Ferguson 210 held in Glasgow University Library, has been extensively reworked to make the text more readable, by modernising the English, attempting to normalise the capitalisation, clearing up punctuation and splitting some of the longer sections of text into more manageable paragraphs. This is not a scholarly or exact edition, for in order to provide that, someone would have to translate the work anew from the original Latin. This book, instead, is an attempt to make the 18th century translation as accessible as possible. I have included in this edition my coloured versions of the woodcuts. Though some of the original printed books had hand-coloured woodcuts, these were quite crudely executed, and I have instead based my colouring for this edition on the more subtle colouring found in the later manuscripts. Limited edition of 100 copies, of which 75 are for sale. 119 pages. 21 coloured illustrations. A5 Hardbound.". First English Edition/Revised Text. Hardcover/Hand Made by McLean. As New. Condition: New condition. First edition. Edited by Adam McLean and signed and numbered by him; Limited edition of 250 copies; 155 pages; Bound in leatherette; Likely printed and bound more recently than the publication date. The Dream of Poliphilus, the Hypnerotomachia, or 'Strife of Love in a Dream' is an elaborate allegory written in the mid-15th century by Francesco Colonna, who is thought to have been a monk. The allegory is in the form of a dream journey undertaken by Poliphilus in his quest for his spiritual love Polia. The allegory is extremely elaborate, with detailed descriptions of symbols and architectural elements, but the underlying structure is simple enough and exhibits a transformation of the main character. This allegory was obviously written by someone adept in emblematic symbolism and had a profound influence upon the later emblem tradition. It is illustrated by many famous woodcuts. The book became quite popular, paralleling in popularity Boccaccio's Decameron. We can detect in this work an archetype for later allegorical writings and in particular the 'Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz', with which it shares some points. In 1600 Beroalde de Verville wrote an alchemical commentary on this work in his Le Tableau des riches inventions. Adam McLean provides an introduction and commentary on the allegorical process and the symbolism contained in this allegory.

Condition: Cloth bound in fine condition. Translated by Christopher Atton and Stephen Dziklewicz; Edited with an Introduction by Adam McLean; No. 23 in series; Limited to 250 numbered copies signed by Adam McLean; Bound in leatherette; 124 pages. At the end of the first volume of the important 17th century Kabbalistic compendium, the Kabbalah Denudata of Knorr von Rosenroth, there is a section containing 16 kabbalistic diagrams together with a text in Latin explaining the symbolism. These diagrams and the text illustrate the key ideas of Lurianic kabbalah. This present book reproduces these diagrams and provides a translation of the text, putting into print for the first time a valuable and unique source for the kabbalistic ideas during the mid 17th century. The diagrams relate in form to hermetic-alchemical figures of the same period. It is from material such as this that the 'Kabbalistic' tradition as pursued today in Western occultism has emerged, rather than directly from the Jewish tradition, so this volume gives us some valuable insights into the roots of Western kabbalah.

Condition: Cloth bound in fine condition. First edition. Limited edition of 100 copies numbered and signed by McLean; Translated by Vincent Matley with an Introduction by Adam McLean; 11.5" x 8"; 49 pages with 24 full page color illustrations; Bound in leatherette. This late Eighteenth Century work is preserved in two manuscripts. It is almost completely unknown. It consists of a series of seven 'keys' presenting the alchemical work in a sequence of twenty two emblematic figures. These are provided with explanatory texts, providing practical explanations of the allegorical imagery. The allegorical images present a kind of alchemical drama featuring as its main characters Vulcan, Apollo, Diana, Mercury, Saturn, and the alchemical adept. It follows the conventional alchemical idea of the sequence of colour changes - black, through white, to red. It uses the idea of the hermaphrodite and bird symbols. This work could well be the last alchemical emblematic sequence ever to have been created.
