Full Leather. Condition: Good. Victor Adam (illustrator). The cover has red leather with gilt letters and decoration. The text block ends are gilt. The endpapers are red and blue marbled paper. French language; 312 pages; 38 plates, with tissue guards, of color illustrations of birds in groupings; color frontispiece and illuminated, second half-title page (these two plates do not have a tissue guard). Date of publication is not given. The printer switched the numbers on plates 10 and 12, but the plates' subjects are in right order for the text. Three board corners are bare of leather, up to a linear 3/8 in. The bottom end of the spine strip has a split on each side, 1 1/2 in. and 2 1/4 in. The cover's extremeties have rubbed spots, especially on the spine strip's corners. The front endpaper's fold has a 5/8 in. split and a 2 1/2 in. split. The pages and some tissue guards have foxing and/or other small, light stains, and scarcely thus on the plates. One page corner has a 1 3/8 in. x 3/4 in. chip that is neatly filled in with a patch, but it is darker than the page. A 1 1/2 in. closed tear on that page is tipped back together with glue. Condition: Good. full-page hand coloured plates [ 59 ] with one or more illustrations per plate many heightened with gum arabic. Folio (29.5 x 21cm) green morocco leather spine with 4 raised spines with gilt compartments & title and blindstamped cloth covers. Upper cover with gilt initials to centre (top hinge split for about 1 inch/ head of spine split for aproximately 1" at head of spine and about half inch on the opposite head of spine/ lower corners with cloth worn/ the book block is split at spine but it is still firmly anchored to the spine) The book has all edges gilt. Half title + Titlepage + plate facing titlepage shows the Cosmographie + [1]-IV is the introduction. + 272pp with interspersed pages 137* to 140* added after page 140 to add further descriptions of fish. The end papers are white moire which has however gone partly dark brown. The first few leaves are slightly foxed but the foxing is quite pale the rest of the pages and the plates are clean and bright. 1 volume. Hardcover.
