A number of thought provoking articles on the movement appeared in Economic and Political Weekly in its early phase. The EPW debate essentially centred around the content of a seminal article by Amalendu Guha entitled Little Nationalism Turned Chauvinist Assam's Anti Foreigner Upsurge 1979 80 a few articles preceding its publication had also addressed some crucial issues associated with the nationality question in Assam. Although the movement came to an end with the signing of the Assam Accord in August 1985 some of these issues more particularly the migration of foreign nationalism into Assam have remained central to the state politics of Assam and are likely to play a significant role in the near future. This book brings together all the relevant articles and a few letters to the editor on the Assam Movement and the nationality question which appeared in different pages of the prestigious weekly with an introductory note essentially for the benefit of the new generation which did not witness the historic movement and also for the scholars who have academic interests in the state politics of Assam. 227 pp.

Fifty years ago in October 1956 the mighty Soviet Union invaded Hungary to crush a massive anti Soviet rebellion that rocked Budapest. Twelve years later Moscow repeated the same coercive and surgical measure in another country in Eastern Europe Czechoslovakia a member of Warsaw Treaty Organization living in the Soviet sphere of influence. This book is a full scale assessment based on original documents and secondary source materials of the US response to the two invasions to determine the efficacy of its policy of liberation of Eastern Europe. A great power despite its pronounced policy of waging a psychological warfare against its powerful adversary proved to be too weak to respond to the need of the hour to stall the Soviet invasions and to translate its policy of liberation into a reality when the opportune moment had appeared. It seeks to establish that tall but vague and false election promises during the 1952 Presidential election acted as an inducement to unarmed populace of Hungary to revolt against a mighty power that crushed the rebellion while the United States remained a silent spectator from a safe distance. It also analyzes America's response to the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 when both the superpowers had by implications accepted their spheres of influence as a fait accompli. 236 pp.
