Ex-Library copy, with expected inserts, stamps and inscriptions. Pages are moderately tanned and occasionally foxed throughout. Cracking to hinges, no damage to end-papers. Binding remains firm.… Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Gilt lettering has become dull. Book has a slight forward lean.

[circa…1845 ], 455 pp. Intéressant cartonnage romantique portant au second un fer historié (2 personnages attablés) et au premier plat la célèbre citation extraite du préambule : "Ici est enfermée l'Ame du licencié Pierre Garcias". Etat très satisfaisant (petit mq. à un mors, petite mouill. en queue, bon état par ailleurs). Nous nous permettons de rappeler "Deux écoliers allaient ensemble de Peñafiel à Salamanque. Se sentant las et altérés, ils s'arrêtèrent au bord d'une fontaine qu'ils rencontrèrent sur leur chemin. Là tandis qu'ils se délassaient après s'être désaltérés, ils aperçurent par hasard auprès d'eux sur une pierre à fleur de terre quelques mots déjà un peu effacés par le temps et par les pieds des troupeaux qu'on venait abreuver à cette fontaine. Ils jetèrent de l'eau sur la pierre pour la laver, et ils lurent ces paroles castillanes : "Aqui està encerrada el alma del licenciado Pedro Garcias". Ici est enfermée l'Ame du licencié Pierre Garcias. Le plus jeune des écoliers, qui était vif et étourdi, n'eut pas achevé de lire l'inscription, qu'il dit en riant de toute sa force : " Rien n'est plus plaisant. Ici est enfermée l'âme. Une âme enfermée. Je voudrais savoir quel original a pu faire une si ridicule épitaphe ". En achevant ces paroles, il se leva pour s'en aller. Son compagnon, plus judicieux, dit en lui-même : " Il y a là-dessous quelque mystère : je veux demeurer ici pour l'éclaircir ". Celui-ci laissa donc partir l'autre, et sans perdre de temps se mit à creuser avec son couteau tout autour de la pierre. Il fit si bien qu'il l'enleva. Il trouva dessous une bourse de cuir qu'il ouvrit. Il y avait dedans cent ducats avec une carte sur laquelle étaient écrites ces paroles en latin : " Sois mon héritier, toi qui as eu assez d'esprit pour démêler le sens de l'inscription, et fais un meilleur usage que moi de mon argent ". L'écolier, ravi de cette découverte, remit la pierre comme elle était auparavant, et reprit le chemin de Salamanque avec l'âme du licencié". Langue: Français.
