All plates are still bright white -- not age toned. "Bulletin No. 8, Geological and Natural History Survey of Minnesota" is hand inked on the spine. Illustrated with tables, figures and plates. Bound in the original green wraps, printed in black. This book is from the libraries of, and bears the tiny ink stamps of both Henry Stephens Washington (1867-1934) and later, Robert B. Sosman. Laid-in is a 20-page biography, bibliography and tribute to Washington by Charles Milton. It notes that Washington, "one of the most eminent members" of the National Academy of Sciences was fluent in 10 languages. Also discussed are his work at the Carnegie Institution Geophysical Laboratory, as vice-president of the Geological Society of America, and his PROFESSIONAL PAPER 99 that is "known to every geologist in the world." A geophysicist and physical chemist, Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA (1965, New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press). Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907, at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years, serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I, his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947, he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor, the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award, "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.".
