Softcover. Stapled. Condition: Very Good. 12mo. 18 by 11 cm. Unpaginated, 16 leaves, counting cover, since all leaves are folded leaves of the same paper stock, stapled at the spine. There are 28 different color caricature plates as a starter. All but two, the first and the last, are sliced into three pieces -- the head piece, the body piece, and the leg piece, the head and leg piece slightly shorter or narrower than the body piece. And that is where the fun, and laughs, begin, or intensify, because even without the metamorphic play, the caricatures capture a ludicrous version of types we probably have seen, if not know. One can mix the three sections of the body to ever crazier fanciful characters, with gender and sartorial fluidity that equals if not surpasses any absurdist theatre. It is a Commedia dell'Arte visual feast compounded many times. This twentieth century creation does have an element of nostalgia, as sliced caricature cards were a popular genre in the early nineteenth century, with card manufacturers and publishers like Ackermann producing them, and amateurs at home making their own manuscript metamorphic cards as well. These cards bring the dress and style of caricature up to date, though. These caricatures here are original to the book. We are not up on the math but we believe that there are easily over 5,000 different images one can create with from the starting point of the 28 plates. There is a straight closed tear approx. one third the book's height running down the spine, making the front and rear cover a little floppy. Light soiling to the cover. Light age toning to the horizontal edges, and one edge has slight additional wear.
