Green cloth rubbed; some scuffing/bumping at board edges and spine ends; some flaking/dulling to spine's gilt lettering but all still legible. Deckle fore-edge. Candle, book, and owl-themed personal bookplate of St. Louis physician, naval historian, and author E. Lee Dorsett (Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967) on front pastedown; a few scattered spots of light foxing/toning and soiling to interior leaves which, overall, remain clean. A few slight stress points at quires but otherwise binding is firm.

Originally issued in Boston by The Stratford Company (1929), this edition utilizes the sheets of the 1st edition with a new title page and binding. Octavo, original black cloth stamped in red. 319 pp. Frontispiece and three additional black & white plates in the text. This copy bears a lengthy and somewhat messy inscription on the title page by Dr. W. Stuart Carnes, Lecturer, Archaeologist, & Explorer, Canton, Ohio. "Billy Heury / I hope you enjoy reading this / book as much as I enjoyed / being with the author, Tam Willard / on four expeditions into the / land of mystery and romance - Yucatan. / I have spent many happy hours / with Thompson (who) discovered / the Sacred Well & explored it. / I have many articles taken from the Sacred Well by Thompson / W. Stuart Cairnes" (followed by his rubberstamp). The inscription refers to the Sacred Well (or Cenote) of the Mayans at Chichén Itzá, dredged by Edward H. Thompson from 1904-1912, where he recovered artifacts of gold, copper and carved jade. The well was also used for human sacrifices and many human remains were discovered. Willard also wrote THE CITY OF THE SACRED WELL (1926) about Thompson's discoveries. Dampstain to top page edges, evidence of a label removed from rear endpaper; very good. Lost race, hidden city. A detailed account of the customs, dress and religious rituals practiced by a community of Mayans in the city of "Multun", in a hidden valley in Yucatan. The inspiration for this novel originated from a statement by John L. Stephen who explored and surveyed this country in 1840 for the first Nicaraguan canal planned by the U.S. Government. Mr. Stephen recounts in his writings that an old priest told him that some years earlier he had seen fr om a high mountain top a populated city with temples and glistening towers which he believed to be the secret hiding place of the remnants of the ancient Mayan race.
