He was born John James Young in the slums of Manchester. He later spent many years in Africa, including Sierra Leone, Grand Bassa in Liberia, Conakry in French Guinea and later, Onitsha on the Niger River. In Onitsha, he worked as a successful trader. He once alleged to have had a romantic-type relationship with Oscar Wilde, claiming that he met Oscar Wilde in June 1894 as a teenager, while dining at the Savoy, and visited the Haymarket to see Oscar Wilde's play 'Lady Windermere's Fan'. John Moray Stuart-Young forged letters allegedly by Wilde to substantiate this. *** 'Osrac: The Self-Sufficient' contains his memoirs and the supposed letters of Oscar Wilde as well as in the latter part his own fin-de-siècle poems. ***John Stuart-Young wrote and published many works of literature including books of poetry, novels, descriptions of African life and autobiographical works. His poems are closely linked to fin-de-siècle and Uranian themes, being informed by decadence and colonialism. ***First impression of the true first edition, in its original art-nouveau gilt illustrated cloth-covered boards. A scarce item, of interest to collectors of rare Oscar Wilde related works of literature, the work of J. M. Stuart-Young, fin-de-siècle literature and poetry, and the titles published by the Hermes Press in Cecil Court, London. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First edition. Gilt-decorated cloth. With two plates but lacking the portrait frontispiece. The text has been comprehensively marked-up in pencil as if for a subsequent selection, though the first half of the book has had those markings largely erased; apart from the note 'Use this all?' in the margin of 'The Lady', the markings are restricted to the crossing through of part or all of a poem, or an approbatory tick. Inscribed, 'E.M. Slocum from John Gambril Nicholson. (see p. 30) Jan. 1918.' Bookplates of Herbert Boyce Satcher and Barry Humphries. Cloth slightly marked, free endpapers slightly browned, else a very good copy in cloth chemise and gilt ruled and lettered morocco-backed slipcase. The book's title group of 39 poems and epigrams bears the author's dedication, on p. 30, 'To John Gambril Nicholson for some most charming letters and many sweet confidences'. 'The fact remains, however,' writes Timothy d'Arch Smith, in 'Love in Earnest', 'that the sonnets are in many cases word-for-word adaptations of some in 'A Chaplet of Southernwood', and Cottam's copy now in the British Museum is angrily annotated to the effect that many of the poems are stolen from Nicholson.' Edward Mark Slocum is notable for having edited the anthology, 'Men and Boys', in 1924. The pencilled markings may be in the hand of Charles Kains-Jackson and from the period when he was making his selection of Stuart-Young's poetry, 'Candles in Sunshine', in which it appears.
