His career spanned more than thirty years of European history and took him at various times to the French, German and papal courts during a period which witnessed the Hapsburg-Valois struggle for supremacy in Italy, the sack of Rome in 1527 and the siege of Florence in 1529-30. Drawing on unpublished archival sources Dr Devonshire Jones builds up from Vettori's despatches, letters and his political and historical writings a detailed account, as seen at first hand, of Renaissance diplomacy and of political life in Florence under both republican and Medici regimes.
