Pattee treats geography, population and ethnic formation, the colonial inheritance, independence movements, caudillismo, political and economic development, religion, education, literature, and cultural life, supplemented by a substantial Spanish-English vocabulary and numerous photographic and art illustrations. Particularly interesting plates reproduce works by Jose Clemente Orozco and Candido Portinari. The book is dedicated to the Escuela Espanola de Middlebury College, where Pattee states that most of these lectures on Hispanic-American civilization were presented and developed. This is the Revised Edition, with copyright dates of 1945 and 1948 and D. C. Heath printing code "6E3." The original edition appeared in 1945 at 297 pages and was reviewed the following year in the scholarly journal The Americas; bibliographic records also distinguish the 1948 edition. Pattee (1906-1978) was a Canadian Hispanist and Latin-American specialist whose career included teaching Latin-American history at the University of Puerto Rico and wartime work with the U.S. State Department's Division of American Republics, helping develop scholarly and educational contacts between the United States and Latin America. Condition: Good+ overall. Original blue cloth boards decorated and lettered in red. Binding remains intact, but the exterior shows substantial shelf and classroom wear: rubbing and scattered surface loss to the boards, heavier rubbing and color loss along the spine and joints, worn corners and spine ends, and several small stains/scuffs. Interior generally clean and sound with light age toning. Former owner's penciled name "Patricia A. Tarsiello" and "4.25" on the front free endpaper. There is scattered pencil underlining and marginal annotation in the text. Of special interest, a sheet of handwritten study notes is laid in, apparently made by an earlier student and keyed to the book's chapters and historical figures. …
