Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. This is a nice, clear example of early printing from the famous Plantinian press. Chriophori Plantini (1520 - 1589) was a well-known French printer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam. He is perhaps the most famous printer of this era. The buildings housing the famous press are still in existence and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This book contains three separate works in one volume, with separate title pages for each part. Plantini's distinctive printer's mark is on each title page. Pagination for the three parts-- I: 353, [7] pp. II: 80, [4] pp. III: 29 [3] pp. The binding is full leather with gilt decoration on the front and rear, and each cover has a gilt rule along the edges. The covers are both detached and the 4 cords have broken. The leather hubbed spine is missing a portion at the top and chipped at the bottom. This appearst to be a later binding for the book. The pages are generally clear and clean, though there is a small worm hole at the top corner of the first 40 pages There is a triangular booklate on the front paste down with the printed name: "Roy A. Tower;" the rear end paper also has a bookplate showing a rat eating a book. There are also couple of old names in ink in an old hand on the front end paper. Sold with all faults. This appears to be the earliest edition of this book from Plantin's press in Amsterdam. Please inquire if you would like more information about this early Plantin press publication. Size: Appox. 5" x 3.25" ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall.

Grolier Club "Lists of publications, 1884-1905," VIII. A touch of rubbing to extremities, occasional light offsetting from added illustrations, but A FINE COPY with almost no signs of use. Produced for a subscribing member of the Grolier Club, our copy of this history of the Plantin Press is extra-illustrated with Plantin-related material, and comes in an appropriately Grolieresque binding. Our author, Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914), was one of the most eminent American printers of his day, as well as a printing historian and a co-founder of the Grolier Club. The American Printing History Association sums up his impact by saying "his encyclopedic understanding of the craft, his advancement of its technology and design, his appreciation of its history, his business leadership, and his many writings earned him, among his contemporaries, the designation 'Dean of American Printers.'" Part history, part travelogue, the present work tells the story of the famed Plantin Press and the Plantin-Moretus Museum, which opened the year before this publication. Christopher Plantin (1520-89) initially set up shop in Antwerp as a bookbinder in 1549, but turned to printing in 1555. He soon rose to the top of his trade, both as a printer and type designer. The press stayed in the family (descending through Plantin's son-in-law, Jan Moretus) for the next three centuries--and, unlike many other presses, retained the types and equipment of its founder. In 1876, Edward Moretus sold the press to the city of Antwerp, and the following year it opened as a public museum, which has operated ever since. According to the Boston City Directory of 1917, P. B. Sanford's firm occupied premises at 78 Bedford at that time. While in Boston, Sanford taught binder Mary Sears Crease; later in his career he worked for the Carnegie Library in Philadelphia. As seen here, Sanford's bindings are refined and well executed, and the present example is distinguished by its very fine condition. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 300 COPIES on paper (and three on vellum).

Add to basketFirst edition. First edition. [3], 60 [of 61] leaves. Engraved title and fifty-nine (of sixty) engraved plates (19 x 25 cm plus margins) affixed at gutters to tabs. Text in triple columns on versos in Latin, Dutch and French. 1 vols. Oblong 4to (19 x 25 cm plus margins). First edition of this collection of fine engravings of scenes from the Old Testament, executed by one of the most prominent and productive of Plantin's artists. The production does not bear a formal imprint and the letterpress on the engraved title is affixed on slips within small panels within the overall engraving. A fourth panel includes a quotation in Latin from Isaiah: the entry in OCLC derived from the copy at the British Library suggests that copy may have a slip bearing an imprint, albeit fictitious, in its place: "Exprimebat Iacobus Villanus, Anno Domini M.D. LXXXI." After the engraved title, each of the following rectos bears a full-plate engraved scene, with explanatory text in three languages printed on the verso of the preceding leaf in triple columns. The three preliminary leaves print tri-lingual prefatory notes, recto and verso. The author of the explanatory text, was the spiritual leader of the religious sect that split off from Henrik Niclae's "Family of Love." The new group was christened by later scholars as the "second Family of Love," and Plantin and members of his circle entertained associations with its membership. Its leader was referred to as "Hiël" (Life of God) and assumed the occasional pseudonym "Renatus Christianus." The engravings capture a broad range of Old Testament scenes, from the literal and occasionally somewhat pastoral, to vivid depictions of spiritual and allegorical subjects. Lacking plate sixty. Tear across upper forecorner of plate 27 neatly mended; plate 50 severely torn and mended, the mend costing a substantial portion of one column of text on verso; a few other very short marginal mends or occasional splits along tabs at gutters; seven plates including the title show old tidemarks which, although present and affect the images, are not terribly offensive; other occasional marginal smudging and soiling; still, a reasonably good example of a very rare book [3], 60 [of 61] leaves. Engraved title and fifty-nine (of sixty) engraved plates (19 x 25 cm plus margins) affixed at gutters to tabs. Text in triple columns on versos in Latin, Dutch and French. 1 vols. Oblong 4to (19 x 25 cm plus margins).
