Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'The Two Spies: Nathan Hale and Robert Townsend' offers a compelling historical exploration of the clandestine world of the American Revolution. Morton Pennypacker provides a dual biographical study that contrasts the tragic fate of Nathan Hale with the secretive, successful operations of Robert Townsend. While Hale is celebrated for his ultimate sacrifice and the famous words attributed to his final moments, Townsend's role as 'Culper Junior' remained hidden for generations. This work is pivotal in revealing the mechanics of the Culper Spy Ring, the intelligence network that provided General George Washington with vital information from British-occupied New York. Pennypacker meticulously reconstructs the risks taken by these individuals, highlighting the starkly different paths of two men dedicated to the cause of American independence. By examining historical evidence and local records, the author brings to light the shadows of 18th-century espionage, making this an essential read for those interested in military history and the evolution of American intelligence. The narrative captures the tension of life behind enemy lines and underscores the critical importance of secret service in the founding of the United States. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
