Overall however, an attractive set, the gilt is bright and they look good on the shelf. Bookplate of George Long (? The English writer and classical scholar ? ) to the front pastedowns of both volumes. Whilst he was serving in the army Hay would be making the literary sketches that eventually appeared in these two volumes. Compiled from his own writings of the Iberian conflict during active service. His obituary notes Leith's presence at 'the terrible retreat of Sir John Moore on Corunna, when the British army marched day after day, ankle deep in mud, until the last the fearful embarkation took place, which left so many gallant British soldiers dead upon the shore', as well as 'the sanguinary battle of Talavera, also at Busaco, famous in song'." .
