Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Good. First edition. Hardback. Foreword by Professor Keith Simpson. Of all the murderers whose exploits have sent shivers down countless spines, Haigh was one of the strangest. No expert, criminal or medical, has satisfactorily explained until this book, how this man grew from a sweet-voiced, well-mannered choirboy into what the contemporary press all too readily described as 'a monster'. The strangeness of his story is compounded by the man's personality. He was the apotheosis of charm, genial, elegantly turned out, with a mildnes of manner. No wonder spectators at his trial asked themselves, how could this be the same man who systematically slaughtered people and dissolved them in a bath of acid? The author has drawn upon every aspect of Haigh's life, including the letters that he wrote to his parents from prison and death cell. With Psychiatric Analysis by Noel C. Brown. Illus., Index. 187pp. 8vo. h/back. Lacks tp, new pds and eps, several pp. with stain mks. Possibly ex-lib. with dw 'fused' to boards, but no markings to indicate. G++.

Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed, some slight yellowing to white parts of jacket, not price clipped (25s), previous owner's inscription to ffep, internally clean tight and squareish, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 175pp, illustrated. An account of the life and crimes of the 'Brides In The Bath' murderer, George Joseph Smith (1872-1915). In 1915 Smith was convicted and subsequently hanged for the slayings of three women, the case becoming known as the 'Brides in the Bath Murders' from his habit of drowning them in the bath. As well as being widely reported in the media, the pathologist Bernard Spilsbury was brought in and the case became significant in the history of forensic pathology and detection. It was also one of the first cases in which similarities between connected crimes were used to prove deliberation, a technique used in subsequent prosecutions. Arthur La Bern (1909-90), was a journalist with an interest in crime stories. He wrote a number of novels, as well as a couple of non-fiction books about famous murderers. La Bern's novel 'Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square' was the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Frenzy'. The film 'It Always Rains on Sunday' was based on the novel of the same name.
