Udall; published by Westcliffe Publishers, Inc., Englewood, Colorado, 1992. Text by Betty Reid. From the blurb This book is being published at a critical moment in Navajo history. The Navajo have always been brave warriors. But no battle the tribe has ever fought compares with the challenge it now faces. The foe, if indeed it is a foe, is both elusive and seductive: popular culture. The Navajo are not yet in the American mainstream, but powerful economic and social currents threaten to sweep away their tribal heritage. With the support of the Navajo Tribal Council, portrait and landscape photographer Joel Grimes lived and traveled among the Navajo for two years, driven by a vision to capture the essence of a nation in transition. After 90,000 miles and close to 45,000 frames of film, Grimes made good on his commitment. The result is an intimate portfolio of more than 150 black-and-white and full color images of the Navajo people and their lands. Woven among Grimes s photographs are traditional and modern Navajo songs, as well as the words of Navajo journalist Betty Reid, who drew upon her heritage and her interviewing skills to create an authentic portrait of the Navajo Nation. This large book, 192 pages measuring 303mm X 250mm, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket, that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap.
