Large quarto, xl, 312 pages with several colour maps and numerous facsimiles of original documents and illustrations (mainly from photographs). Flush-cut colour-pictorial card covers with wide French flaps; minor signs of use; an excellent copy. Number 438 of only 500 copies, and rare since the day it sold out soon after publication. George Woodroffe Goyder (1826-1898), South Australia's surveyor-general for thirty years, is best remembered for the eponymous Goyder's Line. For over 160 years, 'this line which separates agricultural from pastoral pursuits has held true - a feat of significance rarely achieved in the world'. This book 'tells more of this man's achievements as he tackled the colony's problems with a broad and lateral vision, taking into account all aspects of the landscape, from forestry and drainage, mining and railway construction to climate, soil and vegetation. The story of Goyder's valuations of the South Eastern Runs in 1864-65 is told through facsimiles of original notes, transcriptions, contemporary engravings, photographs and a series of fascinating maps, old and new. It also contains papers and commentary to create a context for the revaluations, including the first plans for the drainage scheme in the South East of South Australia' (publisher's blurb). A copy of the original prospectus is loosely inserted.
