Blue cloth over boards. First Edition. 5" x 7.5", pp. vi, [3] 4-319. This book was first intended as an opportunity for Einstein to financially aid his friend, Infeld. Though it soon became a joy for him to share physics in near layman's words as if the reader were seated before him in a classroom. "The theory of relativity deduces, from its fundamental assumption, an answer again of a quantitative character: all energy resists change of motion; all energy behaves like matter." (p 207). Very good with a few edge smudges, previousl bookseller inventory number in pencil, otherwise a clean, firm edition G+ protected by mylar which has been taped to inside flaps, thumb print size chip at top edge, tide mark on spine and some edgewear.

Later printingÂof this classic work, which traces the development of ideas in physics. Octavo, original blue cloth. Boldly signed by both authors on the front free endpaper, "A. Einstein. 53" and "L. Infeld 1958." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. We have never seen another example signed by both authors. Rare and desirable. Upon publication The Saturday Review of Literature praised Evolution of Physics as "masterly Einstein and Infeld's book should do much to spread an understanding and appreciation one of the great dramas in the evolution of human thought.".

Ownership signature of Charles Schuchert (1858-1942), American paleontologist that was the leader in the development of paleogeography on the fly-leaf. First edition, third printing. Intended as an explanation of the totality of Einstein's accomplishments for the layperson, the publication of this extraordinarily successful work was also used in an attempt to find Infeld a university position (he eventually ended up in Canada). According to the preface, "the book is a simple chat between you and us. You may find it boring or interesting, dull or exciting, but our aim will be accomplished if these pages give you some idea of the eternal struggle of the inventive human mind for a fuller understanding of the laws governing physical phenomena."
