Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photo, Map, Table (illustrator). 1st. As the 1970s drew to a close, more than 30 years after the Pacific war ended, the South Sea battlegrounds still contained many relics from that conflict and this fine book concentrates on the aircraft wrecks remaining --- but few of them in their complete original form. Some had been near-destroyed in action or accidents, others were abandoned unrepaired as airfields were captured, or found underwater . Charles Darby,a well-known NZ aviation historian not only compiled the text and the extended captions relating to the photographs, the majority of which were also taken by him. Fortunately, he visited the old battle grounds and airstrips before the tropical vegetation engulfed the aircraft, or unauthorised salvors and aviation collectors gatherede them up, or "protective" officials placed them out-of-bounds. Thus his comprehensive collection of photographs of aircraft flown by the US, Australian and NZ airforces, plus those of the Japanese, was assembled to appear in this book as a lasting reminded of the aerial aspect of the war in the South-Westr Pacific. Most of the photographs were taken in 1974, but Darby's search expeditiions had begun many years earlier and he estimates to have inspected abour 2000 crash sites or aircraft remains, identifying 61different aircraft types and assisting in the salavage of some. First edition of 1979 from Kookaburra Technical Publications, 80 pages, illustrated throughout with approx 100 colour photographs and 135 b/w photos, double page area map shows the location of Allied and Japanese airfields, plus a table of aircraft types and locations. Red hard covers with white spine titles are NF with hint wear spine base, internally NF, no inscriptions. Red DJ with colour photos to front is VG+ with light sunning to spine area . (Includes publisher's four page insert of its other aviation titles.).

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Colour Art Aircraft Paintings, Photos. (illustrator). 1st. Illustrations are the dominant feature of this fine book covering arcraft of the RNZAF from its inception in as an independent force in 1936 until the immediate aftermath of WWII. In that time a great many different types of planes were to serve in the force, some from Britain, some of NZ licence production , most of the USA and a number of requisitioned machines. Charles Darby's main text is in the form of a short history of the RNZAF, with emphasis on its role in the Pacific War, notes on aircraft colour schemes and three appendices covering aircraft used by the force in that period, unit codes and abbreviations used. The majority of 250-plus illustrations are b/w phots of airctaft used from 1937 to 1946, beginning with the ungainly Vickers Vildebeest to the Gloster Meteor jet imported in 1946 and used to introduce this new era in fighters to NZ pilots. Also pictured are bombers, transports, trainers and flying boats, vintage biplanes, some from WWI, that served with the NZ Permanernt Air Force, the RNZAF's predecessor, the Supermarine Walrus' that joined the RNZAF and cruisers of the RNZ Navy. Highlight of the book is the 18 colour art aircraft paintings by Geoffrey Pentland, plus a number of colour photographs. First edition from Kookaburra of 1978 119 pages including index, illustrated throught with colour art/photos, b/w photos.
