Vergilbtes Exemplar, Umschlag etwas verschmutzt. - - "Berta Geissmars Buch erschien zum ersten-mal 1944 in London unter dem Titel «The Baton and the Jackboot» ("Der Taktstock und der Schaftstiefel") und erlebte dort bis zum Kriegsende vier Auflagen ein Beweis für das große Interesse des Publikums an den Problemen des Musiklebens und der Musiker, die in das Zwielicht der von den Nazis vergifteten politischen Kultur geraten waren. Dr. Berta Geissmar stammte aus einer hoch-musikalischen protestantischen Mannheimer Familie jüdischer Herkunft. Sie lernte den jungen Wilhelm Furtwängler Anfang der zwanziger Jahre in ihrem Elternhaus kennen. Seit der Zeit begleitete sie seine Karriere mit Anteilnahme - viele Jahre, bis kurz vor ihrer erzwungenen Emigration aus Deutsch- land im Jahr 1935, als seine Sekretärin. Danach lebte sie in London, wo sie 1936 von Sir Thomas Beecham engagiert wurde. Prieberg, der besondere Kenner der Musik im Dritten Reich, hat in einem aus-führlichen Vorwort und mit detaillierten Anmerkungen zu den entsprechenden Buch-stellen diese Neuauflage in den Rahmen unse-rer heutigen Kenntnisse der Tatsachen gestellt, die Berta Geissmar damals nicht wissen konnte oder aus der Zeit heraus und aus Rücksicht auf andere nicht nennen wollte.
