First edition, journal issue in original printed wrappers, of Baxter's solution of the 'eight-vertex model' in statistical mechanics, using the 'star-triangle equation', now called the 'Yang-Baxter equation' in his honour. His use of this equation led in the 1980s to the idea of a quantum group, the study of which yields solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation and provides insight into the properties of the corresponding statistical models. In 2006, Baxter was awarded the Lars Onsager Prize "For his original and groundbreaking contributions to the field of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics, which continue to inspire profound developments in statistical physics and related fields".
